Blue Iris Farm Rescue & Retreat

Connections Program

Healing through human-animal connection

At Blue Iris Farm, we believe every person deserves a safe place to breathe, be seen, and reconnect — with nature, with animals, and with themselves. Our Connections Program brings that belief to life for the communities who need it most.

Why animals heal

Research consistently shows that time spent with animals reduces cortisol, lowers blood pressure, and increases feelings of safety and belonging. At Blue Iris Farm, our rescued animals aren't just residents — they're partners in healing.

Our Connections Program is designed with care for specific populations, each with their own needs, strengths, and ways of experiencing the world. Every visit is tailored, every interaction intentional.

Who we serve

01

Seniors & Older Adults

Golden Visits

Loneliness and isolation are among the greatest challenges facing older adults today. Our Golden Visits program brings seniors to the farm for gentle, joyful time with our animals — feeding goats, sitting with the horses, and simply being present in a peaceful, living environment.

We partner with assisted living facilities, senior centers, and memory care programs to bring the farm to those who may have difficulty traveling. The animals have a remarkable way of reaching people that words sometimes cannot.

Program highlights

  • Gentle, low-mobility-friendly farm access
  • Memory care and dementia-sensitive programming
  • Group and individual visit formats
  • Partnership with assisted living facilities

02

Autism & Neurodivergent Community

Bonds Across the Barnyard

Animals communicate without judgment. For many neurodivergent individuals, the farm offers a rare space where social pressure dissolves and authentic connection becomes possible. Our animals are patient, predictable, and endlessly accepting.

Our Bonds Across the Barnyard program is designed with sensory sensitivities in mind — quieter visit windows, structured routines, and staff trained to support a wide range of needs. Families and caregivers are always welcome.

Program highlights

  • Sensory-sensitive scheduling
  • Structured, predictable visit formats
  • Caregiver and family inclusion
  • Trained, patient staff support

03

Veterans

Healing on the Land

The transition from military service to civilian life can be profoundly disorienting. Nature and animals offer a grounding, non-clinical path toward healing. Blue Iris Farm provides veterans with a place to exhale — to work with their hands, care for animals, and find community.

We offer both structured programming and open farm time for veterans, recognizing that healing rarely follows a schedule. Whether it's a single visit or an ongoing relationship with the farm, veterans are always welcome here.

Program highlights

  • No clinical setting — just land, animals, and space
  • Structured programs and open farm time
  • Community connection with fellow veterans
  • Partnership with veteran service organizations

04

Education & Youth

Compassionate Classrooms

Children learn best when they're engaged, curious, and connected. Our K-12 field trip program and homeschool visits bring science, ecology, and compassion to life through direct experience with our rescued animals and 114-acre working farm.

From learning about animal rescue and farm ecosystems to hands-on activities in nature, our youth programs are designed to spark wonder and build empathy — skills that last a lifetime.

Program highlights

  • K-12 field trips aligned with learning objectives
  • Homeschool group visits
  • Hands-on animal interaction
  • Ecology and rescue education

05

Mental Health, Anxiety & Social Connection

Nurture & Learn

For those navigating anxiety, depression, social isolation, or the weight of everyday stress, the farm offers something rare: a place with no agenda. Animals don't ask you to perform or explain yourself. They simply show up, and in doing so, invite you to do the same.

Our Nurture & Learn visits are open to individuals and small groups seeking therapeutic farm time. We work with mental health professionals, community organizations, and individuals to create visits that feel safe, restorative, and genuinely healing.

Program highlights

  • Individual and small group formats
  • Collaboration with mental health providers
  • Trauma-informed approach
  • No clinical setting required
